Northshore Mall

At the outskirts of Boston, the Northshore Mall is one of the largest shopping malls in New England with 1.7M square feet of retail and dining amenities. Built in 1958 as an open air mall, the property has seen several expansions and renovations, eventually converting the mall into an enclosed shopping destination. The series of major changes over the decades left the property feeling disjointed and tired, with some areas filled with daylight and adjacent areas feeling dark. A renovation and expansion included a new Nordstrom wing with contemporary architecture and abundant daylight. The Lighting Practice was challenged to visually connect old and new sections of the mall, take advantage of daylight where available and integrate electric lighting to simulate the effect of natural light in non-daylit areas. Using calculation software, TLP evaluated the impact of daylight and supplemental electric light to maximize energy efficiency. Indirect lighting from coves and slots, lamped with long life LEDs in difficult to reach ceilings, along with other streamlined lighting effects create a cohesive and contemporary appearance for the entire mall.
