The Gardenside Offices

The goal of this project is to provide an indirect biophilic environment, via visual association to nature in the office building, facing a substantial amount of green space to its North and East facades, by means of preserving views to a pleasant natural atmosphere. The building sits on a lot that was formerly used as a parking lot for an urban playground and park, with the larger urban surroundings to the South and West facades.

Favoring the scenic atmosphere of the Japanese garden to the East, the office building provides excellent window views, with a facade composed of wooden elements that pay homage to contemporary and historic Japanese architecture. These wooden elements seek to create diversity in daylighting and shading depending on the orientation.
Because the West and South sides face the urban infrastructure, we sought to create more dramatic facade patterns on these two orientations in particular. By deploying facade modules that gradually change either going up or down, or sideways, depending on the orientation it faces, the facade aims to make the most of the daylight while countering glare by means of openings and patterns.
