Arizona State University Memorial Union Phase I

Complete renovation, health, fire and life safety code upgrades to the ASU Memorial Union completed in 162 days from Design through Construction, during which time it remained open. Programming, Building Assessment and Design Phases for the 375,000 sf structure were completed on parallel tracks in six weeks in order for a Conceptual Estimate to be developed. Originally built in 1953, the facility had two additions, one in 1972 and one in 1985 which left the facility with a list of code deficiencies. After the fire, the University needed to assess the extent of work that needed to be completed to bring it up to current 2006 IBC standards and, in addition, evaluate a full upgrade to enhance the identity of the University and meet the requirements of SHPO. This included complete redesign and upgrades to 19 classroom / meeting rooms, two large conference rooms, and Pima Auditorium. Studio Ma worked with ASU to design a new "collegiate" identity for the University. Studio Ma provided enough information within the Building Assessment Document and Program / Scope document to allow the contractor, to price all priorities of the University. After the scope was approved by the University, Studio Ma produced all Contract Documents for the GMP in 60 days. The project was delivered under budget and on time, leading to a second phase and repeat client project.
