The goal of the Institute of Architecture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and of its Dean Klaus Bollinger and Dean Hani Rashid is to teach architecture as an all-inclusive thought process that puts the future architect in the position to define architecture as a three-dimensional expression of culture. To achieve this, the three design studios of Kazuyo Sejima, Greg Lynn and Hani Rashid closely work together with specialists in the departments of technology, theory and editing within our institute, as well as with specialists from reputable external organizations.
This potential for interaction is realized in closely networked teams that are kept comparatively small to facilitate the transfer of knowledge. In computerlabs and state-of-the-art model shops, the latest technologies are tested in theory and practice. The continuous necessity of re-defining architecture both in theoretical and practical terms should be the main focus of teaching.

Studio Kazuyo Sejima
Since winter semester 2015 Kazuyo Sejima is heading one of the three architecture studios at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Sejima was selected as the first female director of the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2010. In the same year she was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the highest accolade for architects, together with Ryue Nishizawa with their office SANAA. Following Sejima’s conception of architecture, the studio is focusing on the study of the relationship between architecture and its context, as well as the relationship between space and body. Students are expected to understand the meaning of sustainability, both in culture and society. Sejima encourages her students to reconsider and explore the true role of architects today, in order to create the future of architecture and contribute to the contemporary city’s constant evolvement.

Studio Greg Lynn
The studio focuses on compositions of intricately connected, subtly varied, continuously differentiated elements in non-modular dimensional series. Our student’s sensibilities are attuned to the rhythmic patterns and undulations of calculus as they apply to architecture. We critically and creatively embrace the digital tools that have recently burst into architecture and effloresced in a myriad of forms and shapes.
Studio Hani Rashid
The studio of Hani Rashid will place emphasis on students working to develop conceptual, practical and critical skills and means for the making of new, compelling and forward thinking architecture.
The studio focus will move between architecture as object to environment and phenomena. Operative terms in this studio include architecture as atmospheric experience, as fetishized artifacts, architecture and new forms of dwelling and being, and as an aesthetic, philosophical and metaphysical experience.
