Three Districts, Three Boxes

This project is a proposed addition to the existing arts building, Potter Hall, at Missouri Western State University.

The existing building has three departments, and each occupies a “district.”  These three districts are Theatre, Music, and Art, with each one in desperate need of an expansion.  Because of this, the focus of the project was to create three “gray spaces,” with each one being able to be used by any of the districts, albeit with an emphasis on one of the departments.  There is the Music Box, the Gray Box, and two art studios – Three districts, Three boxes.

There are several changes to the existing building as well; the existing black box is replaced with a computer lab, the warehouse is removed, and a curtain wall is added to the western façade.  Most importantly, however, is the creation of a large atrium between the existing theatre and the Gray Box.  This atrium also serves as a new entrance to the building.
