The Ripples

The Ripples

Zhangjiagang is located on the south bank of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and has a long history. Zhangjiagang is an emerging port industrial city at the junction of the two major economic development zones along the coast and the Yangtze River.
Located adjacent to the Zhangjiagang High Speed Rail Station, KDX Future City Development provides a public realm for exhibitions and outdoor events. QUAD + RFR, believe that every city has a unique, bespoke narrative and an opportunity for an iconic design and even more so because it is close to a Rail Station. A rail station is usually the first thing people experience upon arrival a city.
Zhangjiagang is derived from “a port in the city” and traces back to Neolithic Age about 8,000 years ago. In search of an iconic narrative befitting to the city, we directly focused on the origin of the city and the famous Yangtze River. Zhangjiagang as a major port on the Yangtze river, we decided to create an architectural language based on a nautical theme. Hence, the design of our canopy symbolizes the waves on the Yangtze River that are raised by the breeze or passing ships. The cascading but regular waves becomes to a dynamic canopy design.
