Shenzhen was the first of the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in China and Luohu is at the centre of Shenzhen. Since the early 80’s, it served as the gateway between Hong Kong and Shenzhen with an average of 50,000 commuters per day. Youyi Road in Chinese means the “Road of Friendship”, a symbol of a friendly relationship between the two cities of Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
Shenzhen Luohu Friendship Trading Centre is a redevelopment of a current department store which will be transfigured into a new skyscraper with a seven-storey retail podium at the heart of Luohu. The design creates a vibrant and porous podium by staggering up various retail boxes in dynamic and organic forms in response to the bustling surroundings, delivering a new sustainable and iconic design for the city.
The architectural form drew inspiration from nature and resembles a beautiful calla lily. The generous petal roof brings natural daylight deep into the open-air, multiple-plane retail arcade and induces air flow current for natural ventilation.Green balconies extend from the podium along one of the tower’s edges, creating a true urban oasis in the heart of the city.
