Avian Housing

The Loop is a major development project south of Ghent. In the future, this will become a new, vibrant and green district, offering a mix of offices, office-like, small retail, leisure amenities, and residential buildings. A vision was created that embodies living in a functional, ecological and architectural whole.

Plot 01 (Avian) represents the transition between the high density of the areas surrounding the development. The two identical multi-storey apartment buildings will be laid out at a fair distance along an organic axis that follows the sloping contours of the ring roads. The design of the buildings follows this organic movement.

The facades are characterised by a subtle interplay between open and closed surfaces. The uniformity of materials and simple lines create a balanced patchwork. The recurring window openings give the buildings slimness and elegance. The inward sloping accommodates built-in balconies on the different floors. All the apartments are energy efficient and have great flexibility in terms of design options.

Walking and cycling paths along the green axes connect the various buildings. These axes are also a link within a wider network of infrastructure for vulnerable road users and public transport. Parking for cars and bicycles is provided both above and below ground.
