Volga Corner is the last of four projects funded by a national Precast Concrete Institute (PCI) grant awarded to the South Dakota State University Department of Architecture with Gage Brothers of Sioux Falls, SD as our industry partner. Located at the center of downtown Volga, SD, population 1,926, the site is the center of many community events including several parades each year. The project was developed over 2 years throughArch 101 and Arch 351 coursework and was constructed by a paid summer student work staff.
A single repeated and mirrored precast element creates a series of “V’s” for Volgaand is topped with a cantilevered steel “Hollywood” sign in the center of town that announces itself to drivers on nearby US Highway 14. The bottom of the “V”elements are designed to provide locations for seating and lounging. Site work, foundations, steel fabrication and erection were all performed or managed bySDSU Department of Architecture students and faculty. Concrete formwork, digitally fabricated by the summer student crew, was provided to Gage Brothers for casting the pre-cast “V “ elements.
