This project was done during the second semester of my first year of graduate school in a team of 4 students. The challenge of the competition was to redesign a skilled nursing facility SNF so that it felt more familiar to its elderly residents, instead of feeling hospital like and institutional. Our solution included vernacular architectural motifs that were familiar, and creating multiple "households" that featured shared living and dining spaces, as well as large front porches. These households were connected logistically by hidden/disguised hallways. We also provided several entertainment and recreational "destinations" on the campus that residents could choose from, and were shared with the surrounding community. This gave them the choice in their routine and allowed them to socialize with people from outside the facility more frequently.
