Four Cort Apartments were sited a few blocks west of The University of Texas - Austin, and were designed for the large student population in this area.
Several challenges presented themselves over the course of design for this project. For one, the site itself dropped by roughly 24’ diagonally across. We took advantage of this fall by placing entrances to the 3 level garage both at the lowest level, and the upper level at different points on the site. The residences were designed as ‘fingers’ which terraced from above the garage to grade level in front of it, creating courtyards between. Most units were 2 level townhomes on single loaded exterior corridors. This posed another challenge, which was coordinating the exterior circulation scheme with egress requirements and distances. The skin was designed as a cement board rainscreen with Ipe battens.
