For this studio, two texts - Reyner Banham’s LA: the Architecture of Four Ecologies and Kenzo Tange’s projects were analyzed in their original historical context and re-interpreted as discourses in their new juxtaposition with their implications for the present. Focusing on the ecology of the beach, which Banham terms ‘Surfurbia,’ our proposal was to create an extension of the beach landscape by ambiguating the boundaries among what is beach, what is parking, and what is living space.
