The objective was to design a small house for a Japanese film maker so that she can stay in
when visiting or working in Los Angeles. The overall property is 4 acres but most of that land will be dedicated to the Nature Conservancy. The driveway entry from the street stops short of the site and footpaths will be the only means of access after the house has been constructed. The site is 48ft x 24ft and it sits over a ravine. The premier focus of this project was on structural and material integration into our designs. The construction scale of our model was 1”= 1’- 0”. It was integral to familiarize ourselves
with construction techniques.Actual concrete was poured in place as well as the framework built to produce this model. We had to do calculations to appropriately size the foundation and beams. The concept for my project was to locate the private programs along the back of the building and orientate
the building to the view to maximize the possibilities for flexible open floor plan.
