[INTRODUCTION]
Elizabeth Avenue is one of several historic districts in Charlotte, North Carolina. Within the next twenty years, this neighborhood will transform into a revitalized, mixed-use development consisting of a grocery store, cinema, small retail stores, and housing. The future renovation of the streetcar adds character to this small neighborhood, and brings a sense of community with the connection between Uptown and Central Avenue.
[CORE]
Wellness centers function around a centralized core. This core exemplifies physical and visual accessibility to all major programmatic spaces. It symbolizes the heart of the facility. Upon entering, the visitor should be drawn to this location. Other primary spaces branch off from this point, allowing the user to have a clear understanding of the facility's organization.
[CONCEPT]
The angular form of the wedge draws the pedestrian into the facility. The primary activity spaces run parallel with the wedge, as it intercepts the pool area. Rainwater runs along the roof of this wedge, where it is then collected into cisterns located in the basement. These cisterns supply the recreational and rehabilitative pools. The track creates a horizontal datum within the facility's envelope. This visual characteristic emphasizes movement within, and connects the primary activity spaces physically and visually.
