We wanted to create Something Minimal and Unhurried, Something Quite and austere. We wanted to create an enclave that does not call attention to it self, but when it does it is assertive in its Presence.
Typically one designs a house bottom up. This was not one of those typical cases. Our design came to us from the top down. We began with a hipped roof, compressed it, squeezed it and, worked it over. This was not an exercise is functionless form making. What we were after was to tease out a structure that resonated with the underlying plan. What we were after was folding planes of a dark material that sidestepped the distinction between roof and wall. It was an exercise in origami using a simple palette of materials.
