East Hollow

This project is the radical renovation of a home from the nineteen seventies designed by the Modernist Sarasota Architect Don Chapell.

After analyzing the existing plan, we identified some avenues of improvement to meet our client's needs better.

The long, narrow plan was book-ended by the kitchen at one end and the Living Room at the other. A staircase in the center choked the circulation between them. This arrangement made the layout unsuitable for the client's needs; to make a space conducive to entertaining. We did two things to achieve this; relocate the stairs from the center and reorganize the front façade to accommodate internal areas better.

In reimagining the front façade, we adhered to the modernist ethos of Chapell's original design. This reimagining was also a direct outcome of the newly organized interior spaces. The façade orients the interior spaces to the south-facing backyard while highlighting the entry (The original design obscured this element). Lastly, the louvered façade outside the living room creates privacy, simultaneously highlighting the view of the existing landscape while continuing the language of the main façade.

The final design showcases smooth circulation, interior spaces that are now open to each other, and an exterior that starkly reflects this internal order.
