The Fleming Smith Warehouse, designed in 1891 by notable New York Architect Stephen Decatur Hatch in the Romanesque Revival Style, was restored by Scott Henson Architect in 2012, which included masonry reconstruction, repairs to the original stone cladding, historic wood window replacement and cast iron restoration. In 2016, the building retained SHA to restore the original copper finials, which all had been lost or removed by the middle of the 1980s. This four month project included historic research to determine the finials’ original design, working with a craftsman in upstate New York for their fabrication, and developing a more secure attachment strategy to ensure their longevity (see details below). The finials were designed to withstand hurricane-force winds.
