It may seem surprising that a Canadian was chosen to design a Russian state-funded match for the historic Mariinsky Theatre. Gergiev, general and artistic director of the theatre, visited Diamond’s Four Seasons Centre, home of the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, and was wowed. When Gergiev and Diamond met for dinner the following year, the two saw eye to eye on everything from acoustics to street continuity. — music.cbc.ca

The newly opened cultural arts center complex "Małopolski Ogród Sztuki / Małopolska Garden of Arts" in Krakow Poland, has been selected for the Prof. J. Bogdanowski Prize 2012 for the best architecture realized in Krakow. Designed by Ingarden & Ewý Architects, this new cultural institution houses a performing & media arts center, as well as a mediatheque, and is run by Krakow's Julius Slowacki Theater and the Malopolska Voivodship Public Library. — bustler.net
We have received plenty of photos of the recently completed Wuxi Grand Theatre in Wuxi, China. Designed by Helsinki-based PES-Architects, the 78,000 m2 (839,600 sq ft) project was the competition-winning entry back in 2008 and is the first large scale example of Finnish design in China. — bustler.net
A shortlist of five design teams was announced this week by the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA). The selected teams are now invited to submit proposals for the design of the Xiqu Center, one of the first landmark buildings for the West Kowloon Cultural District, the largest cultural project in Hong Kong to date. — bustler.net
Over the weekend, OMA’s design for the stage set at the historic Greek Theater in Syracuse, Sicily, was inaugurated with the performance of Aeschylus’s Prometheus Unbound, directed by Claudio Longhi. Les Architectes FABG is the winning firm in the architecture competition for a new cultural venue adjacent to the St. Lawrence River in Montreal's Verdun Borough. Mateo Arquitectura recently completed the new building for the Film Library of Catalonia in the Raval district of Barcelona.
