Architects, developers, consultants and university officials shared updates on the building's design at a public presentation Thursday at Cartwright Hall where planners announced the building will now comprise four step-like floors instead of five. [...]
The changes have been made in the name of efficiency and cost-effectiveness, said Michael Manfredi of the WEISS/MANFREDI firm that won a competitive search to be the $40 million college's lead designer.

From the COLDSCAPES design competition earlier this year, an exhibition of the winning designs is currently on display hosted by the Kent State University Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative — a timely event as the weather grows colder in the U.S.
Last Friday's exhibition opening also celebrated the book launch of "COLDSCAPES: Design Ideas for Winter Cities", the sixth volume in CUDC’s Urban Infill Book Series.

Kent State University has chosen a glassy, light-filled design concept by the firm of Weiss/Manfredi from New York for its $40 million new building for the College of Architecture and Environmental Design.
Richard L. Bowen & Associates of Cleveland will be the “architect of record” for the project.

From simple and functional to splendidly provocative, four proposals vying to become reality as Kent State University's new College of Architecture and Environmental Design were presented to the public Thursday.
The university hosted the four partnerships competing to design the $40 million building by providing a forum so the architects could pitch their ideas for "solving the problem," as one presenter put it.

Nearly 40 firms from around the world entered the competition to design the university’s new College of Architecture and Environmental Design which will form a gateway to the campus in the city of Kent.
They included Hadid, Moussavi, BIG, Gensler, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Perkins & Will and Eric Owen Moss Architects.
But the long list of eight contains only US practices. The most internationally recognised are Morphosis and NBBJ.

This is truly a significant list of 36 teams. Those who have applied include Zaha Hadid, who is deemed the leading female architect in the world; Coop Himelb(l)au, who created the Akron Art Museum; Thom Mayne of Morphosis; and numerous other designers of note. Seven of the teams contain AIA National Firm Award winners, geographically located from Boston to Seattle. Many are recognized for their work across the country and around the world. — kent.edu
