Reinventing Cities, C40’s global design competition for urban design professionals, has launched with a group of 15 new participating communities for its fourth edition.
The group includes Almere, Bilbao, Bologna, Brussels, Glasgow, Milan, New York, Palermo, Renca, Rome, San Antonio, San Francisco, São Paulo, Seattle, and Venice. A total of 29 projects were selected for the cohort, which this year comes with an added call for collaboration with the private sector.
Some of the more significant initiatives being supported are San Francisco’s enormously challenging prospect of converting office buildings to housing and the city of Milan’s efforts to build more social and student residences in order to accelerate its Mayor (and the C40’s Vice Chair for Europe) Giuseppe Sala’s vision of a "more inclusive, green, and liveable urban environment."
C40 added that the 27 other winning projects remaining are "highly ambitious regarding environmental and social benefits and go beyond business as usual."
"Through the Reinventing Cities Competition, we're transforming underutilized downtown buildings into a range of reimagined and sustainable spaces, including housing," San Francisco Mayor London Breed said of her city's involvement. "Through C40, San Francisco joins cities around the world to think big by setting new benchmarks for sustainable development, greener economies, and a more resilient future for all."
To date, Reinventing Cities has supported some 40 projects currently under construction worldwide.
