LA's Materials & Applications has announced regular evening showings of Day/Dream, a collaborative spatial project by artist Sara Suárez and architect Regina Teng that investigates new ways of forming livable environments.
The project complements M&A’s Heat Aid initiative that addresses water and shade inequity through gathering and redistributing crucial resources during hot months. Day/Dream combines moving images, spatial design, and optical research. The exhibition shifts between two states, day and night.
During the day, an array of Fresnel lenses bend light to modulate the thermal effects of sunlight. The lenses are arrayed across a series of cables, held in balance by counterweights. They work to passively cool or heat the space and also provide inverted or magnified views of the site. At night, the space reorients around a video and sound composition that uses an archive of dream narratives collected through a series of public meetings. The dreams are expressed through images, soundscapes, and voice recordings, which are enhanced by the lenses.
As stated in a press announcement: “In a moment when our needs for liveable environments and new relationalities are increasingly urgent, this convergence of practices explores the radical, material potentials of seemingly ephemeral phenomena.”
Day/Dream is on view at the M&A Storefront Project Space at 1313 Sunset Boulevard until September 24, 2023. It is open to drop-in visitors on Wednesday evenings. Additional viewing times are available by appointment only here.
