LIPMAN has been announced as the winner of the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art’s Garage Screen 2022 Architectural Concept Competition.
The Moscow-based firm will create the pavilion used in the museum’s Garage Screen summer cinema series. The winning design called for a load-bearing frame coated in metallic mesh and lined with reused plastic water bottles. The pavilion is sound absorbent, refracts light, and is made of recyclable materials that are meant as a reflection on the temporal nature of its existence and subject matter.
“Throughout the working process we reflected on the intersections that exist between architecture, cinema, and life, eventually coming to the conclusion that they are united by temporality, cyclicality, and unpredictability,” founder Dmitry Lipman said of the design. “That is how the idea of creating a bottle pavilion that looks more like an image or a mirage than a real-life structure emerged.”
LIPMAN’s design beat out 118 other entrants to the competition that was judged by Garage Museum director Anton Belov, head of construction Dmitry Konyakhin, curator Evgeny Gusyatinsky, 2019 winners Ashot and Armine Snkhchyan, artist Alexey Ryumin, architectural historian Ayrat Bagautdinov, and Strelka KB partner Varvara Melnikova.
The competition was organized by Strelka KB in coordination with the Garage Museum. The pavilion will be realized by the end of summer 2022.
