This year's edition of the Philippe Rotthier European Prize for Architecture saw 107 applicants from 26 different countries responding to the 2021 theme of Genius Loci (or "Spirit of the place").
Of the applicants, two laureates were selected alongside a special Jury prize winner:
Grand Prix Phillipe Rotthier (€ 20,000): Anandaloy (Reception center for handicapped persons and sewing workshop for women“Dipdii Textiles”) in Rudrapur, Bangladesh by Studio Anna Heringer
Philippe Rotthier Prize for "The Reconstruction and Enhancement of the Local Heritage" (€ 15,000): M’Hamid Oasis in Zagora, Morocco by Terrachidia
Special Jury Prize: Journalist Stéphane Bern for his "determining role in promoting awareness, protection and enhancement of the architectural heritage through his television programmes such as Secrets d’histoire and Villages, Monuments and Jardins préférés des français"
Two projects were given special artistic mentions: RAAAF ǀ Atelier de Lyon for their Deltawerk in Waterloopbos, The Netherlands; and Swiss artist/architect Onzgi for his installation titled Somewhere. Five other projects received Mentions while the remaining projects received Nominations from the 9-member jury.
An award ceremony will take place on October 23rd at the CIVA in Brussels. It will be accompanied by an exhibition at the foundation.
