2020 Lyceum Fellowship - BELT TIGHTENING, Bungalows For A M̶i̶l̶l̶e̶n̶i̶a̶l̶ Family
Presented by: The Lyceum Fellowship
Register/Submit Deadline: Friday, May 22, 2020
Does the design of a space for only residential use make sense as remote and flexible work proliferate? Is a garage the highest and best use of limited space when car ownership is declining? Or could a flexible studio space be created on the same footprint? Learning from the history and design of bungalows and utilizing the standard Chicago lot, design a new housing prototype for Chicago. Understanding the historical design context, demographics and shifting definitions of family to be more expansive and inclusive, define, design, and deploy a new housing prototype for Chicago. The student should consider the space over the course of generations and plan for flexibility in overall and occupant use. Architectural and narrative diagrams should be utilized to explain the proposed design. Students should question current acceptable standards for residential construction. What does it mean to build affordable and efficient homes that families can afford?
Cliché – Call for submissions for Quinta Colonna
Presented by: Quinta Colonna
Register/Submit Deadline: Saturday, May 9, 2020
Crediting the origin of the word “cliché,” Quinta Colonna launches a call for submissions where words are not forbidden, but priority is given to visual content.Cliché was originally a tool used to reproduce an image through different printing techniques. From a single cliché, almost indistinguishable copies are generated in a repetitive process. Cliché is also something defined as a cultural superstructure. The repetition of the basic element creates a pattern that leads to a meaning that differs from the original one. These superstructures contribute to build the stereotype, which in turn, sometimes, redefines the meaning of things themselves.

2020 Architecture & Film Symposium Call for Papers
Presented by: University of Cincinnati, School of Architecture & Interior Design
Register/Submit Deadline: Sunday, Jun 7, 2020
Film is a dynamic representational medium offering the ability to collapse time and compose visual narratives frame-by-frame. Like cinematography, architecture engages spaces within the view frame as well as the ambient effects of spaces beyond. In both practices, time may be translated into measures of movement and occupancies of space. Apart from architecture informing scenography and cities serving as backdrops for moving images, film discourses have actively participated in shaping and critiquing urbanism, architecture, and interiors. And while architecture and design may not necessarily be central themes in a film, their latent influences inform cinematic processes of thinking and making.
Working from Home Competition
Presented by: Archistart
Registration Deadline: Monday, Jun 8, 2020
Submission Deadline: Monday, Jun 15, 2020
Working from home competition is the new international contest of ideas promoted by Archistart in order to experiment future visions on the coexistence between living and work. The unprecedented current situation dictated by the international health crisis requires us to reflect on remote work and on the sustainability of carrying out our work inside our homes. The contest requires the design of the reference apartment, lived by a young couple that, even after the end of the pandemic, decides to work from home (WFH) more frequently. The typical WFH day alternates moments of concentration and individual work with others on calls and meetings with colleagues. How do you imagine a joint of such activities in the home spaces?
