This week is all about discovering the unknown within our city, whether that's the hidden-in-plain-sight or the uncertainty of future city planning. While you're trawling through the cupboards to get out that winter coat, grab your boots while you are in there; there's a lot of walking in this week's picks...
Don't miss out on this weeks talk in the Great British Building Series on this year's best examples of civic architecture, and check back regularly to keep up to date with London's latest happenings and our weekly recommendations!
Croydon: Growth zone to culture hub | 12 October
Starting with a networking lunch, this half day will include a conference session and afternoon tours of the area. Croydon was recently named the UK's fastest growing economy, and is the first of the Mayor's Growth Zones to experience masive investment.
New London Neighbourhood Tour - Covent Garden | 14 October
Covent Garden Market is one of London's best-preserved squares, and used to belong to the Bedford Estate. The tour will travel from this 18th century gem, to RenzoPiano's Central St Giles and its colourful façade, taking in the rich mix of commercial and residential within the area.
Café Art MyLondon Exhibition | 10-15 October
See London's built environment like you haven't before; through the eyes of the homeless. 100 disposable cameras were handed out to the homeless this summer, and the resulting 2,500 images have been curated for this exhibition. Focusing less on homelessness and more on how we live in the city, this exhibition not only gives an insight into the perspectives of those involved in the project, but also gives an opportunity for them to get into an artistic career.
A Smarter City: Smart Buildings Panel Talk | 12 October
The global population is set to reach a staggering 9 billion by 2050, with the majority of people living in cities. This event will have presentations from practices including Curl la Tourelle Head on how to address the solutions for the architecture of our cities, and the concept of a 'Smart City'.
InspiralLondon Festival | 12-15 October
Returning this year
to provide over 300 miles of artist-designed trail, InspiralLondon is a perfect
opportunity to explore the part of the country we live in. The network of
pathways spirals out from Kings Cross all the way to Gravesend, and is split
into 36 achievable segments. This festival is a fantastic way to discover more
about the city whilst using the potential of walking as art.
