The Sound and Matter in Design exhibition at the Design Museum Holon in Israel explores the relationship between sound and design, as well as how sound influences our everyday environments and experiences. From site-specific installations to dozens of historic objects on display, the exhibition is divided into several mini-exhibits that address the core theme of sound through three different prisms: object, space, and environment.
“Sound is one of the most significant ‘raw materials’ in the designer’s toolbox,” Maya Dvash, the Design Museum Holon's Chief Curator, says.
Upon arriving at the museum, visitors will encounter the Sound of Architecture, a site-specific installation that transforms the Design Museum itself into a musical instrument. Curated by Anat Safran and Lila Chitayat, the installation “exploits the building's architecture and the capacity of its hollow Corten ribbons to function as echo chambers to create an all-immersive ‘musical arena’, where visitors become the composers.”
“The sound is emanated from 100 speakers located in different areas and from the building itself, compelling visitors into the multi-sensory nature of the exhibition.”
The Seeing Sound exhibition in the museum's Upper Gallery showcases over 50 objects, from stereo systems and speakers used in the 1960s to contemporary pieces that furnish many of today's living rooms. Curated by Anat Safran, Lila Chitayat and Elisabetta Pisu, Seeing Sound is divided into three categories: stationary, mobile, and interactive objects.
The pieces “exemplify the conceptual shift from object design to the design of a user experience”, while showcasing the way sound and design fit into domestic environments. Last but not least, visitors will also encounter the interactive Parentesit Wall Panels, which Lievore Altherr Molina designed.
The exhibition is open now until October 28. Learn more about it here.
