After a successful inaugural edition, the RIBA International Prize is back for a second year. As RIBA's first global architecture prize, the International Prize crowns one project as the “world's best new building” that exemplifies architectural ambition on a global scale and how design is addressing today's concerns.
Launched during RIBA's first-ever International Week in London earlier this month, the competition is currently open to any qualified architect in the world for a building of any size, type, or budget. Late last year, Grafton Architects' UTEC vertical campus in Lima won the inaugural title.
So far, the 2018 Grand Jury includes Elizabeth Diller as Chairperson; Joshua Bolchover, co-founder of Hong Kong-based Rural Urban Framework (and winner of the first RIBA International Prize’s award for Best Emerging Practice); and lay juror and acclaimed choreographer Wayne McGregor. The full jury will be announced in the coming months.
Once the shortlisted projects have been selected, two expert panels of jurors will visit each project twice in person. Then, the Grand Jury will select four finalists to visit in person for a final time. The International Prize winner will be announced in November 2018.
“In launching this call to entries, we are also launching a call to arms to the architecture community and to the public to consider the importance of challenging the status quo, of putting forward new paradigms, and of thinking broadly about architecture’s potential reach,” Elizabeth Diller stated. “Building on the success of its inaugural year, I look forward to beginning the process of discovering a building of strong civic importance that contributes to the culture of architecture while addressing the democratic values of our time.”
