This fall and winter, the Center for Architecture in New York City will be hosting a new exhibition called Built by New York to culminate the space’s 20th-anniversary celebrations.
Described by the AIANY’s executive director Jesse Lazar as a “valuable opportunity to survey our community's achievements,” the show will feature 281 projects from 112 New York-based architects and take shape across three floors of the Center for Architecture’s galleries at 536 LaGuardia Place.
This is the first AIA New York Member Show since 2016. Projects from members of all five borough chapters will be included in order to provide a snapshot of their contributions to the architectural landscape of the city. Their respective scopes offer either two decade look at the past and future with considerations given equally to both achievements and possibilities.
2024 AIANY President Gregory Switzer says: "Design excellence stems from community—Built by New York is emblematic of this spirit. As architects and changemakers, we have a responsibility to enhance the physical and social-emotional health for both individuals and communities. This begins with cultivating relationships, sharing information, and seeking input from our community members."
Within the space, work on every scale and typology is presented. There are a total of 212 from the greater New York City region presented side-by-side with the work of several practitioners abroad, which are as far-ranging as the Centro De Artes Nadir Afonso by Louise Braverman Architect in Portugal and 1100 Architect's Böllenfalltor Sports Hall renovation in Germany. Other highlights include the Gansevoort Peninsula Park Pavilion by nARCHITECTS and Field Operations and the Korean Cultural Center by SAMOO Architecture.
The exhibition is being staged as part of the ongoing Archtober festival in New York. Built by New York is open now and will remain on view until April 5th, 2025.
