The first ever European Solar Decathlon ended yesterday in Madrid and a US team took home the grand prize for most efficient home. Virginia Polytechnic State University's Lumenhaus with sliding facade beat out 16 other houses from around the world for top honors. An exciting competition with amazing architecture and innovative design, over 190,000 people visited the competition over the last 10 days. Inhabitat

jetsongreen claims the lumenhaus was inspired by the farnsworth house.
as someone who has been to the farnsworth house, can anyone tell me one bit that is actually reminiscent of farnsworth, outside of the central core (which doesn't house mech/kitchenette like farnsworth)?
architectural masturbation!
maybe you could say 'point of departure'?
given that we hear about the europeans being so far advanced in terms of environmental initiatives, it's great to see that a u.s. school had something to show 'em! go va tech!
i'm sure that the europeans' lead more because of how much actual market saturation can be attributed to green design compared to how wasteful our construction market continues to be, but still...
Was this European decathlon held in Spain because Spain was actually not allowed to participate in the regular solar decathlon for some reason? I remember reading that a while ago, but I can't remember why they would not let Spain compete.
Yeah it is great that a US team had such a good design.
The illuminated facade is great because these houses are running off the grid so that beautiful facade is generated from solar or some other sustainable source. There is sometimes too much green architecture today that is not so attractive and architects just put tons of green vegetation all over some bad design and it is then termed as nice green design.
This design is nice because not only does it have this bright interactive facade that on a normal building would be burning up energy, but here it is almost a torch to show off its efficiency and technology.
if you cant win here, then go to europe...that's what i have always said
I guess when you say "europeans' lead more" you're actually saying "SOME europeans' lead more". Germans, to be more precise.
