gosh, but that's lovely ...
great fabrication pictures in the link.
Those fabrication pictures ARE cool, but point up why, even though I agree with 765 that this is a really lovely project, it doesn't resonate with me on a really deep level: I find the structure that supports those sexy curves FAR more sexy than the curves themselves, and that good stuff all gets covered up!
But that's just me - I like it when the underthings are the things themselves.
As a facade it's a really simple idea beautifully executed and serves as a nice contrast to the adjacent buildings without being too showy.
I'm a little disheartened though when I see some of those interior spaces. That ceiling treatment is horrendous! It's really a shame that the soft curve of the window is overpowered by such a clunky and poorly thought out ceiling. It really seems like 2 different designs.
The idea of using boat building materials and fabrication techniques is definitely interesting.
One thing i am unsure of (my reading comprehension isn't so good this early in the morn) is the historic aspect/context. Was the adjacent building with the normal facade part of the project too? In other words did they do a more contemporary facade for the alleyway and then keep a more original facade for the corner on the main thoroughfare?
Gorgeous sculptural piece. I'm curious what it means for the interior away from the facade--what else happens inside the space that is a result of this "melting" surface?
Went to see this building on Thursday evening. Beautiful and it sits well within it's context, the facade could be a bit smoother but it does create more interesting light reflections. I'd like to see the interior and the lower facade treatment during the day.
i didn't know aluminum (?) could bend like that.
very stunning facade.
