There are rumors surfacing in China that OMA injected sexual references into their design of the CCTV building, leaving many Chinese humiliated.
An online poll conducted by huanqiu.com yesterday revealed that 47 percent of participants believe there were pornographic incentives in the design of the CCTV building, and “felt very angry,” while 35 percent believe the incentive “might be true but they couldn't care less. The other 18 percent didn't believe the rumor. - news.xinhuanet.com

i thought it was love and sex but critics called me 'Bull Goose Looney' .;.)
if the myth/fact lasts and takes a hold this is a huge issue. seems like it is already happened. very strange and massive problem. wow. the graphic interpretation f...g the designer back. ultimate cliff hanger on 'justice is done' or 'that's not fair' ? i don't think it is going away. when something like this etches on the collective memory, it lasts forever or at least a lifetime...
media giveth, media taketh. watch your lines on the drawings!
OMA has had pornographic references in their literature since S,M,L,XL ...that stuff was way more graphic than the above images. Rem Koolhaas had written an entire piece about Japanese censorship of male and female genitalia's relationship with the void, complete with snapshots of blacked-out felatio side-by-side the Nexus Housing project.
Did nobody notice the used condom in the "skyscrapers-in-bed" painting done by Rem's wife?
Not to mention that he once wrote a script for a soft-porn flick?
And everyone at Cornell affectionately references our new building as a box with a huge boob going into it?
I'd be almost disappointed to know that there wasn't any sexual references in his new work, and if the Chinese knew what they were getting into in the first place maybe they wouldn't be having this problem, which IMO isn't really the problem at all - they are only now starting to confront their bitterness toward western architects for using China as a free-for-all architecture experiment and, lacking the critical ability of their western counterparts, will only produce more and more of these kinds of attacks on other projects (I expect).
I myself am torn. I respect Rem (to some extent), I can read his "humor" - I know the design process for the CCTV did not involve the placement of a giant vagina, but on the other hand I hate that fucking building so go on, "activist" tabloids! Tear it up (no pun intended)!!
As someone who "may have" shared a living situation with the main designer (years ago...and it wasn't Koolhaas) I can't imagine any infusion of sexual imagery in his architecture unless Rem did ordain the 40 story orifice to induce epiphanic sexual enlightenment. This would also benefit Beijing as well in the process. Killing two "birds" with one bone I mean stone so to speak. The sexiest thing I remember said designer proffering might have been a heavy handed implementation of tabula rasa or the truculent soiling of the urban fabric.
vulgar is not exclusively pornographic, is it?
yes it's really clear that koolhaas is a total sex addict and is trying to insidiously insert (pun pun pun!) and impose his crazy porn desires on the chinese public in the easiest way he can by convincing authoritarian clients to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on massive dildos cleverly disguised as buildings.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar?
I asked some co-workers (all chinese) what they thought it looked like and none of them said anything about parts of the female anatomy
I guess ignorance is bliss...
Except I get a great view of the right leg every time I use the elevator and this is all I'll think about now...damn you archinect!
