Ben Fry, infographic artist and co-creator of Processing, has created a map of the USA (minus AK and HI), consisting of the 26 million individual road segments across the nation. The result is quite fascinating.

All of the streets in the lower 48 United States: an image of 26 million individual road segments. No other features (such as outlines or geographic features) have been added to this image, however they emerge as roads avoid mountains, and sparse areas convey low population. This began as an example I created for a student in the fall of 2006, and I just recently got a chance to document it properly.

I love this project. Where can I buy a poster, Ben?
It's really amazing but I don't understand exactly why there are white/empty blocks in the midwest... he says it's because the way different local administrations identify those roads.. does that mean that there are only the peripheral roads on the boundaries of the squares or that there are more roads inside that he could not identify?
anyway I want a poster too! (and I have not even been -someday I hope- in the US in my life!), it's a beautiful work of art, me thinks.
Incredible!
