I was ready to call that quote above 'lazy journalism', but them I saw it was an architect that said it.
Please. Most people don't even know how to arrange furniture, and they're going to lay out their own house plans?
Leaving aside the old utopian idea that whole industries can be retooled overnight to fit one firm's idea of a standard prefab system - I think the other false cliche here is that anybody can do it, and the perfect house will just self-organize.
I could see a middle path with architects and experts doing more critique and consulting of self generated plans w/in a system like this.
thanks for the article - I'd be more interested in "genetic mutations" from this process... like a house constructed only of bathrooms.
765 - anybody can build a small house - people do it every day all over the world. it's just that in the western world we have to deal with advanced infrastructure and codes. I don't think the DIY house is for everyone, but I think it will give people a greater appreciation for something that is well designed if they do it themselves.

Only problem I have here is with the statement that in this future "architects don't actually design houses anymore".
While I am all for process design i still think there will be more to it than that...
