Does the fact that Whole Foods Market is opening a store in Detroit surprise you? Well, a lot of Motor City residents were surprised by the decision, too.
The move does signal that a little pocket of Motown is thriving. And that’s great news – especially to Detroiters, who have seen their city eulogized ad nauseum in recent years. But the level of affluence in the neighborhood surrounding Whole Foods is well below what you would see in other cities that have undergone urban revival.

A Detroit comeback would be heartwarming, as in an underdog succeeding. And, don't kid yourselves, Americans who think driving a foreign car is cool - the quality gap between Detroit iron and foreign iron has essentially been closed. Please buy American.
There is such a dichotomy between Bloomfield Hills et. al. and the decaying part of the core. Well, at least there will always be Greektown and flaming saganaki cheese, which is where I discovered it! Motor City's coffers are in bad shape and this is indisputable. This needs to be reversed and it will be a long haul. The city is probably more in need of urban designers, planners, sociologists, and economists at this point than it is starchitects producing concepts for individual buildings.
