A conversation with architects Qingyun Ma and Thom Mayne - Sunday February 17th, 2008 at 9pm on 89.3 KPCC FM, Zócalo Radio
Mayne says, people believe that L.A.’s residents are comfortable living in a “fake old new world,” rather than “exploring what it means to be alive in the twenty-first century.” Ma and Mayne also debate public versus private space, the difference between a city’s life-cycle and life-span, and the idea that L.A. is a “laboratory” where we “live by default” more than by design.

Santino, was that link directly to the audio, because I didn't hear anything.....???
WonderK..
I don't think Zocalo has posted the audio yet.
When you first posted the new item i bookmarked the site and have been checking back to see when they post the audio..
The audio link seems to be available now.
I found the conversation very interesting..
One thing that struck me though, was he mentioned an article in Wired Magazine a few months back which suggested that if you want to live green forget all the expensive fixes just move to Manhattan.
Mayne mentioned that he was surprised by this, that it required a paradigm shift for him to understand..
I am not sure why..It seems as if the understanding that cities are more effecient etc is obvious to me and others of my generation..I would think someone of Mayne's knowledge would be aware of this...
Alos,
Ma's emphasis on short term, temporary architecture, whose very temporality is equivalent to effeciency, customization is interesting. He seems to be suggesting something i find counter-intuitive. That rather than design for the long-term (which many champion as 'sustainable') it would be this short-term, re-configurable and (i guess recyclable) architecture that would be the most green!
