The UN’s latest report, Sustainable Bioenergy: A Framework for Decision Makers, is likely to force some stakeholders back to the drawing board.
BBC: “The European Union and the US have recently set major targets for the expansion of biofuels in road vehicles, for which ethanol and biodiesel are seen as the only currently viable alternative to petroleum fuels.” WAN: “The report will come as a shock to many governments that have included biofuels as a key component in their strategy to meet their Kyoto targets.” UN: “…at their worst, biofuel programmes can result in concentration of ownership that could drive the world’s poorest farmers off their land and into deeper poverty.”
