Two wonderful essays on art, design, and commodity are feature on the web. One on Design Observer by Thomas de Monchaux titled What If Apple Is Bad for Design? And the other on ICON by the late Donald Judd titled it's hard to find a good lamp. Although each essay considers a different subject the conclusions of both authors align in a way which makes one consider that perhaps these essays belong together--merged here as some sort of critical marriage. enjoy.

both good articles, john. and i always enjoy/appreciate the dialog that follows the articles on design observer.
awesome. i'm reading the design observer article right now and came across this great line:
Basically the iPhone is a 1996 Ford Taurus — that car in which all design problems, from logo to windscreen, were solved with an Illustrator-stretched oval.
Yes, excellent read at DO, including the comments.
Both Judd & de Monchaux essays are ludicrous for different reasons but Judd’s was by far the more entertaining. His flat-footed assertions made me laugh out loud.
You present a valid point though John. Are you prepared to suggest candidates from each for synthesis?
Judd:
"Beginning from a fixed construction cost still leaves the questions of too little to the designer and too much to the producer-organiser-wholesaler and to the retailer." See Konstantin Grcic for an eloquent refutation.
