In his extensive article in today's New York Times Magazine, entitled The Power of Green, Thomas L. Friedman proposes that alternative energy strategies and environmentalism will bring the United States together across party lines and lead the country, once again, to be "the beacon of progress, hope and inspiration" in the world. This is in advance of a documentary that premieres on the Discovery Channel next weekend entitled "Green: The New Red, White, and Blue" which features Friedman's reporting on green technology. James Howard Kunstler posts one of his typically cuss-filled rants about the Friedman article - I got the link from Design Observer.
Well, I'm not typically a big Friedman fan but I appreciate the breadth of this article and the amount of attention he is giving it. Also it takes a very hopeful, optimistic tone, and goodness knows we could use a bit of optimism.....
Agreed. Kunstler is sensationalist, but amusing to read (and thought-provoking).
I felt that kind of optimism after 9/11, when I honestly thought the attack was such a shock to the American psyche that we would respond ultimately with a considered, generous, workable response to try to stop the craziness of the world. Could I have been more wrong?!?
And though I'm clearly somewhere between Friedman and Kunstler, I love to envision a world where the US government says "We need to take a long view of what is good for our citizens and our global community." I'm enough of an optimist to believe we will do that, albeit incrementally, slowly, fighting every step of the way.
I started to read this but could not get past the first paragraph. The Power of Green? Could it get any more jingoistic? This is truly the year that the buzz terms of green and neoliberal got married.
