The project received approval from the Architectural Board of Review (ABR) last year, but this week, with the plan returning for final sign-off on some late-hour landscaping tweaks, the board majority, for what appeared to be political reasons stemming from the gay-marriage flap, opted to abstain from voting on Monday. — independent.com
Helene Schneider, the mayor of SB, and a proponent of marriage rights, says Chick-fil-A’s Architectural Approval Shouldn’t Hinge on Owner’s Politics.

their sandwiches aren't good anyway.
Bad stance from the SB Architectural Board of Review members, I agree that everyone is entitled to their personal opinion but this is strictly business. They are being paid to perform their duties as members and their actions was unethical.
I'm gay, and pretty left-wing in my politics, but agree with LTarch. Free speech means free speech for those you disagree with (everybody is, after all, in favor of other people being able to state opinions with which they agree). The ABR members should hold their noses, and approve or deny the application on the basis of the relevant jurisdiction codes.
also agree with ltarch that this board needs to stick to their purview and keep their less-relevant views out of this considerations.
but i WOULD be surprised if the architectural board of review is paid. may be different in santa barbara, but these folks are typically professionals who volunteer their time.
there has been a lot of overreach surrounding this chick-fil-a issue. i may choose not to spend my money there, but a mayor or review board restricting their right to do business is not an appropriate use of their authority.
So you all know, they are indeed volunteers in Santa Barbara, are elected by city council to serve, and serve for 4 years. I don't like chick-fil-a's food or politics either, but I agree with maccionnich.
