I don't think that's AP's work, Bryden, as much as it is a precedent. Additionally, all work handed over to the lowest bidder becomes an exercise in polishing turd. Also, bryden, according to Wired Magazine polished turd flooring is the hottest new trend.
ya, not my work, not my firm. just in the same city as me...but it did win a local AIA award last year.
another precedent, although i don't have an image, is located in Orlando, FL. Full Sail, a very well respected school, took over an entire strip mall. the renovation at the main entrance to their facility, in concrete, steel and glass, is pretty nice actually...more appealing to my sensibility than the above example.
Wow - this would honestly be a dream design job for me - I guess polishing turds must be some previous subconscious fetish of mine! I love the challenge of really trying to do something interesting with serious constraints, and yet absolutely no expectations for what it could be.
The Full Sail project actually seems like the ideal program for strip-mall renovation too! Cool project, AP, thanks for sharing it.

Major updates will have to be made to roof, shell, and all the basics considering these things were built with a 10 year life expectancy.
is an example of adapting a 30yr. old K-Mart to a library in Jacksonville. It is what it is...
...but it works.
Wow...It looks like you can polish a turd.

I found an exterior shot of the entrance on their low-bandwidth HTML site...
remember, this is in a strip mall, and was probably an entrance to Jo-Ann Fabrics or equal in a previous life...
