Placing a price on nature can save the environment. No, this isn't a mafia hit, but serious economics and environmentalism that is a major shift in how our capitalist system may start operating.
This is a radical idea that trumps property rights by valuing the natural services as common property. So if you have a forest and I have an adjacent field of sunflowers - the new paradigm implies that if you chop down your trees, then you owe me damages for the destruction of the honey bees that lived in your forest that pollinated my flowers, and the degradation of our watershed, and the wind damage now that my field isn't sheltered - wow!

This was also roughly covered in the book Natural Capitalism, which was published while Clinton was still in office. Excellent idea, then and now....
these ideas have been kicking around for a while as wK so correctly pointed out.
To amend my post: Natural capitalism is finally getting paind respect from people with money, aka Wall Street. The LAtimes article highlights several recent ground-breaking partnerships between mr. moneypants and bleeding heart greenies - that's cool.
