The High Line in New York succeeds because it unites neighborhoods and gets people outside, building a community in a space that was planned to be demolished: it brought life from rehabilitation. As we all know, Los Angeles has many places that need rehabilitating and that could serve as a point of unification. The problem though is that unlike the High Line we don’t have an area that stretches between neighborhoods without feeling forced or unantural. — laimyours.com

something with the La River
or a stretch of 10 or 110? just as a sort of random and permanent takeover? though the river seems a more practical/ecological choice. similar to what has been proposed for the river greenway already.
could be a topped out portion of the 101 as it goes by downtown. Could be a "light tunnel" under elevated highways that connects neighborhoods. Could be usable subway stations. Could be a strip of outdoor seating areas at existing cafe's.
we don't need a 'highline'. we already got plenty of great places.
I agree with Paul. The revitalization of the LA River corridor has the potential to be our Highline. Lots of great work going on there. Mia Lehrer has been working on it for quite a while:

i like the highline, the highline is the most significant public park in this century, in america to date, but, not every fucking city in america has a highline. minneapolis suffers from this bullshit too. memo to america's cities; find your uniquely situated, underutilized or dilapidated infrastructure and design something that plays to its strength.
people in my "town" think that the skyways are WAY better than the highline, what a joke.
I think there is relevance with what Seoul has done with the re-development of the Cheonggyecheon river.
beta: re: skyways: the primary argument for them is winter, which i understand. in february, the skyways are WAY better than the high line.
i think it would be appropriate for the skyways to have open/close dates, like public pools do. maybe memorial day > labor day. it would be like a fabulous community event every year: 'the weather's getting survivable again; close the skyways 'til fall!'
" ....memo to america's cities; find your uniquely situated, underutilized or dilapidated infrastructure and design something that plays to its strength." = LA River Corridor
LA should be less concerned with finding a Highline than with finding two Highlines.
2 is way mo better than 1, yo!
