2x8:Taut showcased outstanding work from students from very diverse design backgrounds, "What is most impressive is to see the level of work from all these different schools." said 2x8 juror David Montalba, AIA - "You expect high caliber work from the more highly regarded schools, and you see that, but it's also great to see some of the smaller schools, like the Community Colleges, submit high level work." — aialosangeles.org

Oh these poor kids. They actually look happy and optimistic.
If schools really want to start preparing the youngsters for the practical realities of the world then the first thing they need to do is stop handing out awards.
Yo!
It is quite fascinating that so many commenters on Archinect believe that students would be best served going to a technical college being a cad monkey to prepare them for "practical realities" So many seem to want to live in a boring world of pure practicality with no room for any aspirations.
Median, You might be surprised to see for yourself the quality of the design work presently being done at some of the local community colleges, as exemplified in the work by the students who were awarded at the 2x8 Taut competition. A few of the community college programs have developed substantially in the quality of design education and in addition, offer hands-on, practical knowledge of construction, technology and practice related courses.
If you have carefully examined the quality of the design work, and still feel that there is "...no room for any aspirations." well...then continue with your conclusions.
