Outdoor wood boilers are currently unregulated by any pollution standard and have fueled lawsuits and anger over the quantity and quality of smoke they produce. Originally devoloped for rural buildings with a large supply of fire wood, these renewable fuel devices currently emit higher amounts of particulates then the typical wood stove. The smoke is impacting neighbors health and property values - so local officials are looking into gettint them banned, while the epa looks into regulations... Not all things renewable are green the owners of these boilers are learning. So now we're going back to the colonial days of burning our forests for heat- is this really a good thing? NYT
