On Friday November 17th, Pugh + Scarpa in partnership with Clearscapes of Raleigh, NC were selected from a pool of twenty-five international architects to design the new CAM (Contemporary Art Museum) in Raleigh, North Carolina. The complex, scheduled to be completed in 2010, will include a 35,000 square foot museum and a 10-15 story residential tower. The project will be the keystone of redevelopment for the downtown warehouse district. “For us, it’s important that we do a model urban development and architectural statement that is in sync with our mission as a museum of contemporary art, so that it appeals to the public art of architecture,” foundation board member Louis Cherry said.

In other news: On December 1st, it was announced that Pugh + Scarpa had bested finalist Daly Genik, Mark Mack and Koning Eizenberg to design the new 18th Street Arts Complex in Santa Monica, CA. Jan Williamson, 18th Street’s executive director said, "Pugh + Scarpa were chosen from a field of over 20 invited applicants on the basis of their innovative design, past affordable housing experience and sustainable building experience.”

The 18th Street Arts Center was founded in 1988 and is Southern California’s largest contemporary arts and artist residency center. The 1.2-acre site it occupies was formerly the site of several industrial buildings constructed from the 1930s through the 1950s. The new center is envisioned to be three times the size of the current facility and will include up to 60 live-in studios for artists as well as space for nonprofit arts organizations, theatre and performance spaces, galleries, workshops and a host of other support space expected to contain approximately 135,000 gross square feet.
