The National Design Awards are one of the top honors in the design world. Not only do you get to pick up your award up on the museum mile in NYC, you also get to have snacks at the White House.
Last month 5 finalists, all communication designers, snubbed the white house reception and wrote this letter to explain why.

chip kidd's response is very smart but is only possible because of the others' protest. if all had accepted the invitation, knowing that kidd likes to be somewhat provocative, i wonder if HE would have refused?
but i love/hate these situations where i fully understand both sides.
some of the comments following the article, along the lines of 'get over yourself', totally miss the power of using any opportunity to truly stand on principle and have your position heard. we don't get them all that often.
