Expanding on the City Green series in NYT. Zoka Zola sends us word of her new research on rationalizing and recalibrating the urban fabric of Chicago into a more sustainable system.
1] zokas analysis of sustainability is naive and very student-like
2] even though she was in chicago and during her own house as the zoning code was re-written, where was she with these ideas?
3] as the last zoning code lwas morphed from '55-01ish, i wouldnt hold my breath too long for these changes to appear in the next version....
student-like or non-academic. seems fairly well tailored to someone not trained in architecture that might have an interest.
in order for any of this to be implemented she'll have to get buy-in from a lot of stakeholders from varying backgrounds and with a variety of concerns. seems like this is simple enough to understand for the bullet-point business crowd, the homeowner, the mayor with no time to spend, etc. if it's to be useful in zoning regs it has to be somewhat generic in application and fairly simple - neither of which are natural fits with holistic sustainable thinking.
she may still have a lot to do, but i'd offer congratulations that she's moving ahead with it and getting some notice for it.
'student like' by professional or not[what is non-academic?] - i am tired of looking at relentless 'couple of arrows/ floating suns' around a building and tagging it green. oh boy.
background: zoning was just revamped / re-written under the direction of peter calthrop[2000 draft for comment and issued formally 2004-5] and metropolis 2020[now 2030] by bill mcdounough. and ZZ?
getting calthrop put a 'CNU' twist to it. bla.
