While living in Philly I very often heard rumors similar to this about Urban Outfitters. One I remember is the club called 700 Club had made some knit hats, and UO released the exact same hats but with the number 600 o something. As I say, it's all rumor - but I definitely wouldn't put it past them.
Personally, I hate Urban Outfitters. Though their store on Walnut St in Philly is pretty cool.
Did you hear the backstory of UO? Basically, this couple started it as a vintage / DIY store in Philly, and when they split, the guy ran with it and turned it into this corporate chain, and the girl kept her ethics and opened the White Dog.
Though a friend worked on the design of the flagship store on penn's landing and it was looking pretty rad last I saw ...
