on Jamiaca's squatter policy hearing. They discuss the usual concerns, the visibility of slums, inability to police and that of incubating criminals. But at least they ackowledge better housing must be provided before proceeding with action against the squatter settlements.
This is so funny. Alot of these so called squatter areas in Jamaica are so that people don't live in slums. The people have the ability to build - perhaps slowly, so they "seize" land with access to infrastructure (schools, water, irrigation, drainage etc). The slums typically were older urban settlements that existed on plots of demolished buildings, or inbetween spaces left back from development. Odd that they can spend resources on a squatter management unit, but not enough to build housing. In any case, the kind of housing being built is archaic and takes up too much valuable land, the perception that people dont want to live in multi storey buildings.
interesting. are you saying the gov is not making a distinction here between the squatter settlements and the even less habitable "slums"? i dont expect most governments looking at poverty in their overburded system do, but if they are making that distinction that's better than lumping innocent squatter communities in with those congregation areas for criminals. though, i think both communities should be addressed equally, housing. that's a good point too, about the archaic inappropriate housing taking up valuable resources. jam-arch, have you got any projects in jamaica i could check out that are better dealing with all this over there?
thx!
spending money policing the slums is more profitable than integrating them into society through real housing. because, who profits off crime?
