Disposable technology leads to toxic environment. Ted Smith, the founder of the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition, explains why manufacturers should act preemtively. WNYC
This is environmental news, which is valid and necessary in American and Architectural discourse.
However, it is not architecture news, of which Archinect provides a unique source.
Dwell magazine listed the Archinect News section as one of the better sources to look at when considering hiring an architect. Non-architecture topics, while important to bring to the architecture community, confuse its purpose. Would you want the news section to end up more like the amorphous discussion section?
We'll I think it's perfectly relevent when you consider that architects and designs are some of the number one contributers to disposable technology - computers, printers, ipods which grace not only the news section, but also the discussions. Considering that I am an editor I have deemed this important news for the community and it fits into what I think architects or americans should be concerned with. If you pay any attention to the categories to your right there are a number of topics. As Hans Hollmein said everything is architecture!
I agree that news of this sort is relevant to architects, and that we should pay attention to it. However, that this is what you think "architects or americans should be concerned with" belies that you post this article as part of your personal belief system, not because it is objectively news about architecture. There are 29 editors at archinect. Should they all be able to post whatever they feel is relevant to architecture, which, as you quoted Mr.Hollein, is "everything"? I think the site would cease to be relevant.
That’s great. Glad you could post your comments and thoughts.
Obviously, I don't agree with you or your perspective. Perhaps, the larger point about this website is that you can voice your opinion and your beliefs and your unique perspective (unlike the NYTimes), but just because you think you have a lock on what should and shouldn't matter to the world of architecture doesn't mean that Archinect will become relevant.
I think each editor has items, issues, and beliefs, which matter and drive them and since some of us are architects, designers, or what have you, doesn't mean we shouldn't post items we think are relevant to a larger audience in the world of aesthetics. Also, who ever said this site had to only included architecture news? There are categories designed into the site (which I use) for different types of content. If you want architecture only you can get it…like this
These topics relate directly to our world, our environment, and the way we think within the frame of aesthetics. As these are facets of architecture and design I believe as an editor that they are relevant, important, and critical to the discussion of how we live and what matters in the world we construct. As you said “if†you start posting everything, as news etc… My response is that this is an editorial decision and you can leave the “ifs†to Paul and Javier.
As I said before you don't have to read my contributions, especially if you cannot handle my unique perspective on these matters. Like you said there are 28 other editors…read their submissions and comments instead.
Thank you again for voicing your criticism. in the future I think Javier gave you a proper location to voice these types of concerns. If you do not wish to contribute to the content of the news blurb, you can do so Here
Thanks for the good work, John Jourden. I think the links you provide are interesting, future-thinking, and extremely relevent to architects -- considering the statistic: over 40% of waste produced in the United States is from the construction industry. (I don't have a source link to this stat, but anyone can google it!)
